Bender Introduces New Yankee Dryer Coating Called Infinikote™
Vernon, CA - Bender Machine, Inc. officially introduces INFINIKOTE™, a new coating for dry, semi-wet, and wet crepe Yankee Dryer applications in the paper industry. Developed and extensively tested over a two year period, the new patent pending coating delivers superior wear resistance, thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance resulting in reduced grind cycles, higher production levels, and exceptional performance in corrosive environments, according to Bender.
" INFINIKOTE™ has the potential of becoming the ultimate Yankee Dryer coating," states Gary Ritchie, Executive Vice President of Bender Machine Services, Inc. "We've combined the advantages of existing molybdenum and stainless steel coatings, but have done so without their shortcomings." Prior to the introduction of INFINIKOTE™, creping operations have been limited to molybdenum and stainless steel coating choices to improve Yankee Dryer performance.
Molybdenum coatings are chosen for their good heat transfer characteristics but often lack ideal corrosion resistance in high chlorine production environments. As a result, stainless steel coatings are specified for their corrosion resistant properties. However, stainless coatings often lack the thermal conductivity and wear resistance that production managers often demand. Hence, Bender developed INFINIKOTE™ to perform equally and superior across wear resistance, thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance production parameters.
Bender's research and development team extensively tested INFINIKOTE™ both in the laboratory and in actual paper mill production environments. Initially, in a controlled laboratory setting, the new coating was exposed to a multitude of acids resulting in no measurable signs of deterioration. Further tests were conducted in an actual Midwest paper mill where INFINIKOTE™ samples were placed directly in Yankee Dryer production stream. In this test, measurable signs of corrosion appeared on molybdenum samples while no signs of corrosion were measured on samples coated with INFINIKOTE™. Furthermore, INFINIKOTE™ hardness levels were shown to be higher than both stainless and molybdenum coatings, translating into better wear resistance.
Feedback from customers who have applied the new coating has been overwhelmingly positive. In these applications, customers are experiencing no heat transfer loss due to the exclusive makeup of the coating. Unlike other coatings, INFINIKOTE™ requires no arc spray for low edges. Application of an undercoating for porous dryers is also unnecessary with INFINIKOTE™. The resulting increased thermal conductivity allows Yankee Dryers to operate at near maximum production speeds while also eliminating the downtime associated with application of an undercoating. Improved doctor blade life and higher sheet quality are additional advantages associated with the new coating.
According to Kathy Roberts, Bender's Vice President of Sales and Marketing, "Creping operations that normally have not considered coating their Dryers, should reconsider. The performance advantages that INFINIKOTE™ offers clearly merit special attention."
